2016 National Medal Winners
Ladies Triples Strike Gold In Edmonton
After finishing first in round robin with a sterling 7-2 record, the team of Elaine Jones, Betty Van Walleghem and Sandra Mulholland proved they deserved to finish atop the standings by cruising to a 19-7 gold medal victory over BC-B. The local threesome was never really in trouble controlling the big game from start to finish. Super job gals. These gals are no strangers at winning big games having won their share of medals at national competition over the years. The local lawn bowling community is very happy and proud of your accomplishment. After a short turnaround time, this same threesome will be off to Halifax to compete in the national seniors, and hopefully more medals will be theirs. Enjoy your golden victory, and all the best in Halifax.
Bjornson’s Fabulous Run AT Outdoor Nationals Singles
After trading fabulous shots throughout the game, Pat Bird prevailed 4-3 in extra ends over John Bjornson to win gold. These two superstar bowlers, with ice in their veins, traded amazing shots throughout the game, with Pat making a great final shot in extra ends to seal the deal after John had made a great shot in the second extra end to go ahead 3-2. The loss is John’s first in two years of of outdoor national singles competition, a truly amazing feat, that will be hard for any bowler to duplicate. John went through last year’s competition undefeated winning gold, and this year stopped just short of the gold medal. However, John isn’t finished yet this year, as he will be off to Australia in November to compete in champion of champions, and represent Canada very well. Fabulous run John, and good luck in Australia.
Bjornson Wins Silver
For the second time this summer John Bjornson has taken silver in national singles competition. This time it was at the beautiful indoor venue in Vanccouver. This was a great warm up for John as he’ll soon be leaving for Australia to compete against some of the best on the planet in the singles category. Great tournament John, and bowlers here in Canada wish you every success in Australia
Bob and Betty Add Silver To Their Collection At Mixed Pairs
After a great week of round robin, which saw Bob and Betty finish first and a trip into the gold medal game, they had to settle for silver, losing to a very tough BC duo of Hirendra Bhartu and Josephine Lee, who have won their share of big games. This marks the first silver for Bob, to go with his collection of bronze. Betty has had a simply amazing summer, going to three Nationals, and coming home with three medals; a matching ensemble of gold, silver, and bronze. This is one summer she’ll never forget. Great job Bob and Betty. The local lawn bowling community is very happy for you, and proud of your accomplishments. Enjoy your achievement.
Rob Law Wins Silver
After a stellar round robin and semi final win, Rob Law wins silver in the under 18’s. Well done Rob. Since this is your last year of doing this event you’re going out in fine fashion. Enjoy your accomplishment.
Another Medal For Mb. Ladies Threesome
Congratulations to skip Elaine Jones, vice Betty Van Walleghem, and lead Sandra Mullholland. After winning gold at the Nationals in Edmonton in triples, the local threesome made a second coveted trip to the podium in about the same number of weeks. This time it was bronze at the National seniors in Halifax. That’s two medals each for their treasure chest this summer, and one of the members (Betty Van Walleghem ) is shooting for a third medal with husband Bob, in mixed pairs in mid Sept. in St. Catharines. Great job gals. Enjoy your medals and sense of accomplishment.
